Following months of liquation sales, the store shut its doors Wednesday and began removing its iconic sign Thursday. An official with the company's head office last month refused an Independent & Free Press request to do a story on the closing by interviewing local staff. Last September, through a three-store deal between Zellers' parent company Hudson Bay Company, Target and Walmart, the Georgetown Zellers' lease was sold to Walmart. Walmart plans to make a 17,000 sq. ft. renovation/expansion to that location, and move there from its current location in the middle of the mall.
