Mall, arenas, hospital projects make for exhilarating time These past weeks' events have been the most incredible weeks for council that I can remember. You always expect some hills and valleys being on council, but not like this in such a short period of time. I will recap: First the Town was being sued for $50 million over the Outlet Malls. Before you know it, the suit is settled and we were at a ground-breaking ceremony for the Toronto Premium Outlet Mall located in our industrial corridor. This will be a huge Halton Hills attraction and bring much-needed assessments and jobs. Next, I am told that Transport Minister Bob Chiarelli would like to see me. He wanted to tell me, in person, the fabulous news that the 4-3 highway option will not be proceeding. Yes folks, we won! Thanks to all of you for signing postcards, putting up lawn signs, emailing the MTO, your councillors, MPP Ted Arnott and to our valued staff, consultants and Halton Region. We were against all odds and we won. Big thanks to Minister Chiarelli, who understands, as a former mayor, what it takes to fight for your community. If this wasn't enough good news, we had 7 ·The IFP· Halton Hills, Tuesday, June 12, 2012 Rick Bonnette our official ground-breaking of the expansion of our Georgetown Hospital. This is a great partnership between the Province, Georgetown Hospital Foundation and the Town. The Province came through, matching the Town's dollars, and many donations are still coming in. This was followed with another groundbreaking for two additional ice pads at MoldMasters SportsPlex. The very next day, we get more good news; the Acton Library has been confirmed as a LEED Gold Certified facility. The above events all took place within weeks, if not days of each other. They will have positive effects on our community for decades. What a ride this has been. ··· Much has been written about the charismatic double lung transplant recipient, Hé- lène Campbell. She has done such a marvelous job for the organ donor movement. Before social media, we had our own hero. Nine years ago, 26year-old Sara Murray of Acton (who I personally know) was also a double lung transplant recipient. There was very little press, no Twitter from the "Biebs", Facebook, etc. There was a huge banner with her picture on Toronto General Hospital. Today Sarah has a full life. Thanks to the organ donor program many in our community also enjoy a good quality of life. It only takes a minute to register as an organ donor: www.giftoflife.on.ca ··· Farewell to Acton's Father Bob Bullbrook who will be leaving St. Joseph's Parish in Acton. You will be missed! ··· Keeping it real!
