Grade 9 student Aleks Rapp hadn't competed in shot put or discus prior to arriving in high school and doesn't belong to a club, yet the 15-year-old Georgetown resident earned two top-10 results at last week's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations meet in Brockville. Rapp's second of six throws in the midget boys' shot put measured 14.87m, which was 22cm farther than the bronze medalist and 68cm behind the winner, Matthew Rosati of Toronto's Chaminade College. Rapp also finished ninth in the midget boys' discus with a toss of 39.64m Jaguar Tyler Renton earned a silver medal in the senior boys' javelin at last year's OFSAA championships. CtK's Haleigh Baines placed 20th last week in the OFSAA midget girls' 3,000m. High school roundup nor Brown, Michael Nicolucci and Brandon Clelland were the Jaguar goal scorers in the third-place game. Graduating seniors Kyle Kutlesa and Hanzelka were named co-MVPs. Fastpitch Christ the King's girls' fastpitch team, with six of its nine starters Grade 9 students, blanked the defending champion Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers 6-0 Thursday in Oakville to capture the HSSAA championship. Hayley D'Avilar led off the fourth inning with a triple and scored on a ground ball by Ashley Vatafu to get the offence rolling. A four-run sixth inning included Vatafu stealing home and a double by Cassie DiMascio, who scored on a Chelsea D'Avilar single. Vatafu pitched the first three innings, giving up just three hits, before Jessica Tate shut the door the rest of the way, retiring the last nine batters. Erin Robinson, Lynzie Lamanna and Brittany Praturlon also made key contributions in the victory. Centrefielder Jamie Vieira, who had two hits on the afternoon and threw out an Iroquois Ridge baserunner at home plate, was named the team MVP, while Jenna Waters earned most-improved honours. Seth Laidlaw also had a sixpoint effort against the Tommies, including a hat trick, with other goals coming from the re-acquired Justin Reid (2), Peter Laidlaw (2), Matt Sargent, Brandon Clelland, Daryl Hanzelka, Jayson Crawford, Derek Thomas, Jamie Batten, Chris Haynes and Theo Dol, who had his first as a junior. Next up for the squad is a trip to Orillia Wednesday, followed by a road date with Oakville Friday and the Newmarket Saints will be at the Alcott Arena Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff.
