Oakville Trafalgar girls win OFSAA rugby By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR For the first time in history, the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils are provincial girls' rugby champions. OT earned the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) AAA/ AAAA title yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon with a 24-12 victory over Ottawa's Ashbury College in Ottawa. The Red Devils built a 10-0 lead before the game was 20 minutes 22 Sports Oakville Beaver old, carried a 17-0 advantage into halftime and then added an insurance score after the Colts narrowed the margin to 17-12 midway through the second half. "It's pretty surreal at this point," longtime Oakville Trafalgar head coach Dan Valley said, shortly after the gold-medal game concluded. "This has been a lot of years in the making for this group. We have a big group of seniors who put their work in for four years, so to see them be rewarded for that is very nice." Valley said the Devils, who won OFSAA bronze last year and finished fourth in 2010, felt going into the tournament that this might be their year. "Every member of the coaching staff and team knew we were very capable if we put the work in and showed up ready to play," Valley said of his squad, which was seeded second. "At the same time, we weren't coming in cocky. We were coming in with the right degree of confidence." Maddy Seattle scored a pair of tries for the Red Devils in the final, while Charlotte Dunn contributed nine points and Claire Newman added five. Four-time OFSAA champion Ashbury, the fourth seed in this year's tournament, upset top-ranked Barrie 13-12 in the semifinals Tuesday, while OT blanked St. Peter Secondary 17-0. Daniela Deschamps, Seattle and Newman each scored a try versus St. Peter, with Dunn booting a convert. More coverage of Oakville Trafalgar's OFSAA win will appear in Friday's edition of the Beaver.
