www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, June 8, 2012 · 14 Survival was first thought at his cancer diagnosis By John Bkila OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF When 48-year-old Rob McColm was diagnosed with an advanced form of throat cancer in the spring of 2008, the first thing his mind rushed to was survival. "I've got two daughters and it was just thinking, I am going to be there for them. My daughters are in their teens now, but I kept wondering... was I going to be there to walk them down the aisle, that type of thing," McColm said. For most, that would have been enough of an incentive to get through the treatments and beat the disease, but for McColm, an even more tangible goal presented itself in the form of a bet with his doctors at Toronto's Princess Margaret Hospital. A resident of Oakville, McColm works as director of project controls for the construction group Aecon and as such describes himself as being proactive by always trying to find solutions and putting together plans to tackle problems. "When I sat down with my team of doctors (medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists) and they first walked me through the treatment program... I had my binder, taking down all my notes and basically asking them for feedback on what could I do in addition to... help myself as we went through this course of treatment," McColm said. "One of my oncologists said, `We expect to cure you, and when we do, you can help raise awareness by participating with us in the 2009 Ride to Conquer Cancer'." The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer is an annual charity cycling fundraiser that takes place in various locations across Canada, in support of local hospitals. McColm says he believes pledging to take part in the Ride the year following his treatments helped him get through and ultimately beat the devastating disease. "Not only would it feel so good to participate in it and give something back and help create that awareness... as an aside, you're going to get healthy while you do it because you're working out, you're training," he said. "So it's good for me physically, it's good for me mentally and emotionally, in terms of f having a tangible purpose tying it all in... It absolutely helps you focus." When McColm went back for his first checkup after completing treatments in Sept. 2008, he was told he was basically cancer-free and that his doctors would continue to monitor him periodically for a number of years. MARTA IWANEK / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER "So I stood up, shook his (doctor's) hand and said, `Well you've done your part, now RIDING TO CONQUER CANCER: Rob McColm, right, is participating in the Enbridge Ride to it's time to do mine and where do I sign up.' Conquer Cancer for the fourth time. His wife, Rose McColm, left, has been helping him train and is part of Rob's And I did," he said, "and I've been doing it pit crew. When Rob was diagnosed with cancer in 2008, he had a bet with his doctors that when he was cured, See Fighting page 17 he would help the cause by participating in the Ride -- a goal, he says, helped him beat his cancer.
