Fighting back helps combat some of the fear Continued from page 14 17 · Friday, June 8, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com every year since." McColm explained that he continues to take part in the Ride even after having defeated his cancer as just a way to give back to the hospital that helped him get through it, saying he was overwhelmed with the level of healthcare and engagement by the professionals at Princess Margaret. "In terms of how accommodating and empathetic they were and just sitting down and answering all of your questions -- you just really felt special and that you were in good hands. It takes some of that fear away, of which there is much," he said. "I can't say enough about it, so anything I can do to help raise awareness, raise funds for cancer research, I'm there. It's the least I can do." McColm will be among thousands of cyclists participating in the fifth annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer (www.conquercancer.ca), benefitting the Princess Margaret Hospital, this Saturday (June 9). Riders will cycle more than 200 kilometres through Ontario, completing one of six routes between Toronto to Niagara, with an overnight pit stop in Hamilton. But riding isn't the only way to help support the "It takes some of the fear away, of which there is much." Rob McColm cause, says McColm, as donations can still be made to his personal page at www.conquercancer.ca/site/ TR/Events/Toronto2012?px=1737437&pg=person al&fr_id=1401. "The Ride itself just has that sense of purpose and one of `we can do this' (beat cancer). There really is strength in numbers. You're down there with all these people cycling and you see so many survivor flags on their bikes -- just looking at that, knowing how much good this has done, and that you're part of something bigger, a solution," noted McColm. "To do it on your own seems overwhelming, like any project in life. But when you're together, you can do this and really make a difference and reach that goal of finding that cure for cancer, as they say, in our lifetime."
