Buzz clinches playoff spot Return TDs burn Longhorns A couple weeks, simply earning a playoff spot appeared to be the biggest concern for the Oakville Buzz. Six consecutive wins later and with a postseason berth already clinched, the Buzz now has its sights set on first place in the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior B loop's Southeast Division. Oakville (11-4-1) sits four points behind the division-leading Halton Hills Bulldogs with four games remaining for each team in the regular season. The teams will meet twice more before the end of the campaign, including a clash at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre this Friday. The Buzz stayed within striking distances of its rivals by winning both its games last weekend, 8-6 over the Newmarket Saints Friday in Newmarket and 17-6 over the Markham Ironheads Saturday at Glen Abbey. Greg Campbell had four points (one goal, three assists) to pace the Buzz Friday, with Mike Beirgard and Keyan McQueen each contributing two goals and a helper. Todd Nakasuji added a pair of markers, Alex Whiffing had the Buzz's other tally and Eddie Renaud chipped in three assists. Ian Duffy recorded the win in goal as the Buzz scored the only two goals of the third period after the teams were tied 6-6 through 40 minutes. Saturday, Oakville led 4-3 after one period but blew the game open with 10 markers in the middle frame. Renaud had four goals and four assists to lead the charge, with Nakasuji adding four goals and three helpers. Ryan Callaghan, McQueen, Beirgard and Whiffing all had two goals and Campbell added a single, with Robert Bentivegna contributing three assists. Ben Neeb earned the victory in net. The Buzz will visit the Mississauga Tomahawks tonight (Wednesday) before the first of the two showdowns with Halton Hills. Game time Friday is slated for 8 p.m. Special teams were anything but for the Oakville Longhorns Saturday. Oakville allowed the Toronto Raiders' Rickey Clarke to return two punts for touchdowns in the opening half, a possible explanation for how the Longhorns lost their Northern Football Conference contest 38-15 despite nearly doubling their oppponents in total offence. Another of Toronto's majors came on a 73-yard interception return in the third quarter, making the score 31-7. The Raiders' final touchdown of the game -- a 68-yard pass and run play -- accounted for more than a third of Toronto's offensive yardage in the game (186), while the Longhorns racked up 145 yards on the ground and 293 yards overall. Jared Manchulenko had six receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown and Jermain DeCosta added a 55-yard catch in a losing cause for Oakville, which fell to 0-2. Longhorns quarterback Robin Medeiros completed nine of 18 passes and also ran for 107 yards. Justin Boudreau led the Oakville defence with six tackles and Nick Faiazza recovered a fumble in the end zone to account for the other Longhorns touchdown. Sergio Giusti booted a convert and Manchelenko scored a two-point conversion. Oakville will look for its first win of the season when it faces the Sarnia Imperials Saturday at Bronte Athletic Field. Kickoff for the Longhorns' home opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. 27 · Wednesday, June 13, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com OAKVILLE SOCCER CLUB Sr. B Titans streaking for first time The Oakville Titans have their first streak of the Ontario Lacrosse Association senior B season -- and it's a good one.
