Vol. 50 No. 67 "Using Communication To Build Better Communities" WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 2012 YMCA looks to the north in planning its future By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The YMCA of Oakville's newly-released strategic plan for 2012-16 shows it's aiming to do more business in north Oakville and potentially open a north Oakville facility. The plan was released at the organization's annual general meeting on Monday (June 4). "The clear direction from our stakeholders is we need to do more, as always, and expand our services in north Oakville," said Neil Lester, YMCA board member who chaired Darryl McKenzie the strategic plan committee. This part of the town is now underserved because of the high-population growth that has occurred there. Among the biggest directions in the strategic plan is news the Y is conducting a feasibility study on the potential for that new facility, as well as exploring partnership opportunities. "We'll look at a feasibility study to be conducted to understand if there's room, is there capacity and is there a reason to take a look at potentially building a new Y in north Oakville," Lester said. A total of 69 teams participated -- out of 78 teams registered -- at the June 1 event that saw participants walking from 7 p.m.-7 a.m. to raise money for cancer research. It was also an evening marked by remembering those who have been touched by the disease. There were 56 survivors who made this year's emotionallycharged Survivor's Victory Lap. Though the outdoor track at Appleby College was rained out, participants packed the school's arena. "I am happy to say that the survivors, parwww.mississaugaaikidoclub.com spirit or extinguish the hope symbolized by luminaries lining the track that have become a tradition at the Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser.
