Fencer earns spot on Pan-Am team Canadian Fencing Academy (CFA) member Kirsten Ball has been selected to represent Canada at this month's Pan-American championships in Cancun. Ball will be part of the Canadian women's epee team at the PanAms, which will run from June 14-20. She is coming off a bronzemedal showing at the national championships recently in Saskatoon, the best performance by a member of the Oakville club. Andrea Csiba finished fifth in women's epee at nationals, while Mark Jones placed 25th in men's epee. Ball also claimed bronze at last month's eastern Canadian championships, where teammate Kyle Foster struck gold in veteran men's epee. Joerg Oxborough, Alex Zhou and Jack Leigniner finished 13th, 14th and 17th, respectively, in junior men's foil. Csiba was 10th in senior women's epee, Lorraine Hoyne was 14th in veteran women's epee and Jones was 17th in senior men's epee. Also last month, two CFA teams won medals at the Ontario provincial finals in Toronto. Ball, Csiba and Hoyne teamed up to win the women's epee title, with the squad of Kyle Foster, Mark Zilinski, Stephen Willson and Jones nabbing bronze in men's epee. Leigniner, Oxborough and Zhou cracked the top 10 in men's foil. 23· Thursday, June 14, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com CAPTIVATED AUDIENCE: Students at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School sat in silence as former NBA player Chris Herren told his story of a basketball career ruined by drug abuse. Herren, the subject of the ESPN documentary `Unguarded' has been drug-free since 2008 and established The Herren Project to assist young people recovering from drug addiction. Herren delivers cautionary tale to hushed students The gymnasium at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School was packed but only one voice could be heard. Students sat in silence as former NBA and NCAA player Chris Herren spoke to students Monday, telling them about his battles with drug addiction. "You could hear a pin drop during the presentation," said Holy Trinity teacher Peter Bonfiglio, who arranged Herren's appearance. Herren warned students about alcohol and marijuana being gateway drugs. Herren started drinking in high school, eventually turning to Percocet. A high school acquaintance introduced him to oxycontin -- which started at 40 milligrams a day, and continued to 1600mg a day. Oxycontin and cocaine led to heroin, and the demise of his career. Drafted by the Denver Nuggets out of Fresno State, Herren played two seasons in the NBA. One with Denver, and one with the Boston Celtics. But his brief stops in the NBA were just the beginning of a career sabotaged by drug use. Over the next six years, he played in Italy, Turkey, China, Germany, Iran and Poland. Herren was charged with possession of heroin and driving under the influence in 2004. He entered rehab and has been drugfree since 2008. Bonfiglio was interested in having Herren speak to the students after seeing the ESPN 30-for-30 documentary `Unguarded'. Inspired by the basketball player's message, Bonfiglio contacted Herren's agent three months ago and was thrilled he was able to come to the school. His presentation brought some students to tears and many hugged him when he finished speaking. "He never came off as someone who was doing this for the money," Bonfiglio said. "He did this so he could reach at least one student and stop them from descending into a life of drug abuse." Keeper inspires Cavaliers Continued from page 22 Unfortunately, not all the Cavaliers were present in Windsor to accept their OFSAA championship medals. Backup keeper Andrew Lim was in Korea last week for two surgeries to treat a heart condition that prevented him from suiting up most of the season. His King's Christian teammates put together a package, including a sweater and a medal, that they planned to send overseas. "He's an important part of the team. He fit his role well, even though he didn't play a whole lot," Zietsma said. "He was always supportive of the team and encouraging, and he worked so hard. We were thinking about him personally." That extra bit of motivation may have enough to help put the Cavaliers over the top. "He inspired us a lot," Sossa said of Lim. "He didn't get the opportunity to have what we have, just playing soccer. We just did it for him. We knew what he was going through. You don't get those opportunities every day. "Life is like that. You don't know what's going to happen next." SAVE UP TO $2700 ON NEW FURNACE & AIR CONDITIONER $700 OFF HI-EFFICIENCY CENTRAL AIR BIGGEST SALE EVER! WAS $ PRICE MATC H GUARANTEE.
