MP calls on Bell to reposition `powerful' towers Oakville MP Terence Young is calling on Bell Canada to take down and reposition cellular antennae many residents consider to be too close to homes, schools, daycare centres and health-care facilities in Oakville. In a news release issued Wednesday, Young alluded to several recent incidents where the introduction of cell antennas has raised concern among the community. This included the addition of commercial cell antennas to a cell tower located near a fire station at the corner of Rebecca Street and Bronte Road and the addition of cell antennas to a home being used as a Bell Canada office on Balsam Drive. "Bell Canada has placed powerful broadcast antennae within 11 metres of a child's bedroom and over the heads of our firefighters and refuses to relocate them," said Young. "This is completely unacceptable." In the news release, Young noted that the World Health Organization has classified electromagnetic radiation (EMR) as `possibly carcinogenic' and said that there is increasing evidence EMR affects the health of some people who are hypersensitive to it. Health Canada, he said, also warns parents to reduce their children's exposure to cellular phones with hands free devices, shorter telephone calls and text messaging.
