CtK students aim to `Spread the Word' By NANCY WILKES Special to The IFP Christ the King students Nicole Walker and Kamaia Adamson recently made an important presentation to their fellow students. The `Spread the Word to End the Word' presentation came about as a result of the pair's interaction and discussion with Christ the King Catholic Secondary School's students with special needs. Walker and Adamson were disappointed that the word "retard' or `retarded' is still used as a part of everyday vernacular when making reference to something negative. The two students realized not only how negatively the word demeans those individuals with special needs, but also how insulting the word is in general. Inspired by each of the students they worked with, Walker and Adamson developed an awareness campaign focused changing the common language of people who use the "R" word but may not realize its negative impact on others. Originally the presentation was to be only two assemblies for Christ the King Secondary School students but the campaign was so successful that the school's principal Cairine MacDonald, asked them to do a third.
