The mall, managed by High Peak Group of Companies, will be undergoing a $16 million redevelopment project that will turn the existing shopping centre into a one-stop shopping destination of over 97 stores and services. There are currently about 60 stores in the mall. Renovation of the former Zellers store, which closed earlier this month, has begun and will consist of an additional 17,000 sq. ft. to make room for the expanded 100,000 sq. ft. Walmart slated to open next spring (2013). The expansion will be to the south, behind the Zellers store. The current Walmart location will be renovated and anchored by two national retailers Sport Chek and Atmosphere, as well as 30 new stores. Sport Chek is Canada's largest retailer of sports equipment, goods, apparel and footwear. "Our objective with the Georgetown Market Place renovation is to transform the current space into a modern convenient hub by providing an enhanced shopping experience with a bright, new atmosphere," said Luc Corneli, president of High Peak Group of Companies. "We're excited to greatly increase the number of store offerings to suit the needs of this growing region." The extensive renovation intends to bring in regional and national chain stores as well as offer a number of new services and amenities. There will also be a new and improved open-concept food court that will feature high ceilings and skylights located at the southwest entrance of the mall near the current food court and is scheduled to open this December (2012). There will also be an increased number of parking spaces around the perimeter of the mall parking lot, and brand new washroom facilities. All existing stores and services will remain open during the renovations with minimal inconvenience to customers and retailers.
