Power goes out in northwest Oakville Continued from page 1 By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 3 · Friday, June 22, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com With temperatures hovering around 34C yesterday -- not counting the humidex that soared into the 40s -- approximately 4,000 Oakville Hydro customers found themselves without the electricity to power air conditioning due to a out- age in Glen Abbey/West Oak Trails. Oakville Hydro officials confirmed the outage took place shortly before 3 p.m., and was caused by an underground cable fault. The exact cause and location was still to be determined. "Underground cables are quite thick and they have a whole bunch of layers to them and the Inside Opinion.............................................6 Artscene..........................................41 Worship..........................................44 Sports..............................................45 Classified........................................52 layers are what's keeping the electricity where it is supposed to be. A fault happens if any of those layers get compromised," said Jeff Mocha, manager of assets and control for Oakville Hydro. "Occasionally somebody will dig into an underground service and cut one of those layers and that will cause a fault. "Other times, some water gets in... This is absolutely attributable to the hot weather, the thermal cycling of these cables and all the energy people are using. It does stress the underground system more in this kind of season than it does in spring or fall for sure." At around 3:45 p.m., Mocha said Oakville Hydro was searching for the damaged power cable and would not know the exact cause of the fault until the cable was located. In the meantime, power was transferred to other cables with Mocha stating power had been restored to about 40 per cent of the affected area by 3:45 p.m. Power was expected to be fully restored across the entire area by 6 p.m. Full Delivery: New Homes, Dell Computers, Home Hardware, Ribfest Magazine, Living Green Magazine, AAR Automotive, Kingsway Pharmacy, Fabutan, The Vitamin Store, International Pools, Oakville Wrap, Leon's Furniture, Bass Pro Shops, Michael's of Canada, Q.S.I.
