The Cause for Paws event began more than a decade ago as a tag sale to raise funds for the humane society, held by the R-Dog Post Park Leash Free Committee. It had advocated for and received permission for an off-leash park at Post Park on the condition that they made a donation to the shelter. Each year, the event grew, eventually outgrowing Oakville resident Beverlie Rockliffe's home and moved to the grounds of Appleby College. Last year, Cause for Paws raised more than $105,000 for the homeless, forgotten, neglected and abused animals of Oakville and Milton. This year's goal is $120,000. Can You Afford To Wait? Gala honours Geoff Parker A gala dinner will be held at the Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre on Ontario Street tonight (June 27) to honour the late Canadian Forces Colonel Geoff Parker and the families of those in the armed forces. Parker, 42, who grew up in Oakville, was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan on May 18, 2010 when a suicide car bomber attacked his International Security Assistance Force convoy. He was the highest-ranking Canadian Forces soldier to die in Afghanistan. The gala will recognize Parker's sacrifice by raising money for military families resource centres, said retired Col.
