A centre at York University is offering a free performing arts program at Ecole Sacré Coeur, 34 Miller Dr. in Georgetown. From July 9-27, children ages 7-9 will have the opportunity to participate in a Summer Arts Camp program that offers lessons in music and movement. The camp program involves three weeks of daily morning lessons and activities, and promises to be both fun and educational. Performing arts lessons have been developed specifically for the summer arts camp by music, movement and education specialists in accordance with Ontario Education Standards. Programming will be taught in a friendly camp environment, by highly qualified and experienced teachers with the support of trained volunteers. At the end of the threeweek program, children will have the opportunity to showcase their newly-learned skills in the Summer Arts Concert. The camp is run by the Cognitive Flexibility Centre, a nonprofit organization at York University, headed by Dr. Nicholas Cepeda. Dr. Cepeda investigates the benefits of music DR. NICHOLAS and the arts CEPEDA on children's thinking and academic achievement. The camp program draws on an expansive body of scientific evidence, which has shown that learning music and movement are beneficial for a wide range of thinking and academic skills as well as selfdiscipline, attention, memorizing and focus. The program will contribute to important research being done on child development and learning. In addition to the stimulating performing arts lessons, children will learn about research and win exciting prizes. Before and after the camp program, children will get to meet with the researchers and take part in a series of enriching games and tasks that tap into basic thinking abilities. By participating in these game sessions, children will assist the research team in better understanding the advantages of arts training and its effects on child development, and further enhance the current summer arts program.
