Fireworks safety tips Continued from page 1 5 · Friday, June 29, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Canada Day events. "We definitely have a status beyond a local Canada Day for a clean, wholesome, family-oriented, inclusive event in a gorgeous, natural location," Sargent said. As always, fireworks will be seen just off Bronte pier in the evening. During the day, there will be a number of activities. Children will be able to enjoy bouncy castles, as well as a reptile show from Safari Science and a Monster Mural. Adults will be able to visit the Kinsmen Club of Oakville's Beer & Burger Garden, along with a Vendor Village featuring local works of art. There will also be live performances on two stages, ranging from musical acts to dance. Headliners include the Bruce Springsteen tribute band Glory Days, the Fraser Melvin Blues Band and Bronte's own Fiddlestix. Activities begin at 11:30 a.m. and run throughout the day until the fireworks display, set to begin at 10:15 p.m. Music will continue afterwards. While this is happening on the harbour, nearby CJ's Café on Lakeshore Road in Bronte is hosting an afternoon of live music and busking on the outdoor patio from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Elsewhere in town, Oakville Place will be open on Canada Day (Sunday), but will be closed on Monday. While many residents like to set off their own fireworks, the Oakville Fire Department reminds people to remain safe. It encourages people to take in the professional fireworks display available in town. However, for those who choose to do their own, the department has some safety tips for people. · An adult should be responsible for setting the fireworks off and read and follow the directions on label carefully · Keep water close by, while setting off fireworks away from buildings, trees and dry grass · Light fireworks individually, and never relight a dud -- wait 15-30 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water · Keep sparklers a distance away from children as they get extremely hot and can cause burns, and never give fireworks to children · Never throw or point fireworks at other people, or carry them in your pocket · Keep onlookers at a safe distance away and upwind from the area where fireworks are discharged The Bronte BIA reminds people on-site parking will be limited, with no public on-street parking south of Lakeshore Road. However, a free First Student shuttle bus service will run from 6 p.m. to midnight. People will be picked up and dropped off at the Burloak RioCan Centre, located on the southeast corner of the QEW and Burloak Drive. There will also be a bike corral in the park for anyone who chooses to cycle to the celebrations. Oakville Transit will operate on a holiday schedule with service ending at 8 p.m. Your parents helped you cross the street safely, learn to ride a bike and drive a car Now they need you to help them make the right decision If conversations have begun to explore the topic of retirement living, you're probably wondering where to begin.
