Tourney boosts awareness of women's shelter By John Bkila OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A betting man, Oakville resident Brian Turnbull would always bet fellow members at the first tee at the Deerfield Golf Club that he would have a better game than them when golfing. "One day, one of them just said (jokingly), `we're sick of your betting, Turnbull. Why don't you bet everyone (at the club) and host a charity tournament for it?' So I said, that's a great idea," Turnbull said of the fundraiser he started nearly 20 years ago. A fellow member at Deerfield, and a supporter of Halton Women's Place (HWP), had suggested to Turnbull that he select the women's shelter as the charity to which tournament proceeds should be donated. Turnbull admits, at the time, he had never heard of HWP and soon realized he wasn't alone. "When I hit the road and made sales calls to promote the event, more than 50 per cent of the people I spoke to weren't aware of Halton Women's Place," said the long-time Oakville resident. Turnbull said he then saw an opportunity to do some real good and help raise more awareness of the women's shelter as well as funds to support its operation. Established in 1978, Halton Women's Place is an organization that provides shelter and crisis services for physically-, emotionally-, financially- and sexuallyabused women and their children. Dedicated to ending violence against those women and their children, it serves all of Halton Region with two shelter locations in Burlington and Milton. The locations are not publicized for privacy reasons. "The (golf) tournament is, without a doubt, the biggest ongoing third-party fundraising event for Halton Women's Place," said Carm Bozzo, HWP development manager. "This event has helped us tremendously, to reach our fundraising goals, which in turn help the women and children who have to call our shelters home for a brief, but crucial, period of time... Brian Turnbull, organizer of the Turnbull Aquarium Golf Tournament, a Halton Women's Place fundraiser teer, and we can't thank him enough for starting all this." In its first year, the Turnbull Aquarium Golf Tournament raised $600; the fundraiser has since gathered $186,000 for HWP and Turnbull said he expects the total to surpass $200,000 after this year's edition. Proceeds from the fundraiser go towards a variety of HWP programs and services throughout the year not otherwise funded without community donations, explained Bozzo. Most recently, Halton Women's Place has implemented a publiceducation program with a dedicated staff member who visits classrooms across Halton's schools to speak to students about healthy relationships and teen dating, among other related topics, Bozzo said. Halton Women's Place has 52 beds available at its shelters daily, and receives more than 2,500 crisis calls a year. "There are times throughout the year that our shelters are at capacity or even over capacity," Bozzo said. "Halton Women's Place is the only women's shelter in the region that provides a safe haven, infor- mation and education to support a future without abuse for women and their children." The 2012 Turnbull Aquarium Golf Tournament will be held this Sunday (July 8) at the Deerfield Golf Club, located at 2363 North Service Rd. W. There will be an 8 a.m. start. After having organized the event for several years on his own, this will be the last year the retired Turnbull, 77, will be heading the event. He has turned over the reigns to fellow Deerfield club member Ray Pomroy and six other members to keep the fundraising golf tournament going.
