Police warn residents after east-end break-ins Halton police are asking east Oakville residents to be on the lookout for suspicious activity after a series of daylight break-ins in the east end. Police have been investigating break-ins on Cedar Grove Drive, Gloucester Avenue, Watson Avenue and Douglas Avenue. Between June 18 and July 1, police said, there were a trio of break-ins and one incident where a man was spotted apparently checking to see if a home's back door was unlocked. Police said the suspect strikes between 8:30 a.m. and noon when most residents are at work. The suspect rings the doorbell and knocks several times to see if anyone is home and then begins checking the house for any unlocked doors if he believes the coast is clear. Despite all the knocking and doorbell ringing, the suspect did, on two of the three occasions, enter homes where someone was at home and had to flee empty-handed. In the third instance, the suspect did get in through an unlocked door and made off with a small amount of jewelry. Police describe the suspect as a white male, age 40-45 years, with short dark hair, a tanned complexion with stubble on his face, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-11 tall and of a medium build with a potbelly. He speaks with a European accent. He was wearing dark pants, a blue golf shirt, dark shoes and a newsboy-style fabric hat. He wore a black mesh, weight lifting-type glove on his right hand and possibly walks. The suspect was observed getting into the front passenger side of an older model dark green Chrysler or Plymouth minivan with Ontario licence plates. No description of the driver was available. Police are urging residents to watch for suspicious vehicles or people in their neighbourhood, obtain a description and immediately report their observations to the police.
