May Court awards students The May Court Club of Oakville presented 48 scholarship awards to local students in a ceremony at the Oakville Town Hall atrium in June. It marked the 31st year that May Court has given money to students, and this year $56,000 was given out. Since 1994, Oakville's May Court has funded 308 students with more than $402,500, for their continuing education. Mayor Rob Burton was at the ceremony to congratulate this year's recipients, all students from Oakville's nine publicly-funded high schools. The May Court Club of Oakville was founded in 1956. Merritt Goddard was also in attendance to congratulate two of the May Court Scholarship winners, Stephanie Duré and David Johns, who won Goddard Group Foundation Awards. May Court President Suzanne Allen congratulated Jennifer Krebs-Vandeloosdrecht for winning the Barbara Baker Williamson Scholarship. A special mention was made to Danijela Dozet, who received a May Court Scholarship for the fourth and final year of her undergraduate psychology program at Ryerson University. Dozet has been a volunteer at the May Court Club's Nearly New Shop, which operates at 200 Kerr St., for five years. Thirty-three of this year's recipients are students who will graduate this year, and 15 are second-, third- and fourth-year applicants, who met the criteria for a May Court Financial Education 19 · Friday, July 6, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com award. The criteria is "a more than average financial need and a strong commitment to the community, either the community at large or the school community." Marks are required to be sufficiently high to get into the program of choice and to be able to stay in. The scholarship committee works in conjunction with the guidance departments of the local high schools, where applications are available. Students who qualify are interviewed by a small committee. Members of the May Court Club volunteer to fundraise for this program and the many other programs supported in our community. Money is raised at the Nearly New Shop, which is extending its hours for the first time this summer, and will be open on Saturdays in July. As well, money is raised at special fundraisers throughout the year, such as a scholarship dinner, and the Oakville Cuvée. May Court has been a partner for the past two years with the Goddard Group Foundation, which annually funds two scholarships, the Goddard Group Foundation Awards. Mercedes-Benz Oakville, has been a club sponsor for six years, and home to the Oakville Cuvée event, held in the spring for the past four years. The May Court Club accepts charitable, and memorial donations, for which tax receipts can be issued.
