www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 11, 2012 · 20 Buzz earns a split but face tough task in Akwesasne By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR Even after splitting the first two games of its best-of-five series with the Akwesasne Indians, the task ahead of the Oakville Buzz remains a daunting one. In order to advance past the East Conference's top seed in the second round of the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior B playoffs, Oakville will need to win two of three games this weekend on the Indians' home floor. What's so difficult about that? Well, on their way to a league-best 19-1 record during the regular season, the Indians won all 10 of their games at the Anowarak:wa Arena. But that statistic alone doesn't even begin to do Akwesasne's home dominance justice. Not when you consider that the Indians' average margin of victory in those games was 16.3 goals -- more than the top-scoring team in the league even averaged per contest. The Buzz, however, isn't prepared to back down. Oakville gained some confidence in a series-opening 11-10 win over the Indians Saturday and was competitive once again in Game 2, trailing 5-3 midway through the third period Sunday before eventually succumbing 10-4. Both games were played at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. "Coming in, we knew we could beat them," Buzz forward Todd Nakasuji said after Sunday's contest. "I think (in Game 2) it was just more we weren't finishing our opportunities," continued the 20-year-old, who had seven points Saturday but was held off the scoresheet the following afternoon. "We got some good chances, we just didn't finish. If it was (Saturday), we were putting them in." Oakville also didn't start Sunday's game nearly as well as Saturday, when it built a 6-0 lead SAVE UP TO $2700 ON NEW FURNACE & AIR CONDITIONER $700 OFF HI-EFFICIENCY CENTRAL AIR BIGGEST SALE EVER! WAS $ added another before the three-minute mark to set the early tone. "We came in thinking we'd walk through this series," said Indians captain Shane Francis, noting Akwesasne outscored the Buzz 10-5 in the final 30 minutes of Game 1. "They humbled us (Saturday), and that's what we needed." Ironically, Akwesasne's loss came with its full complement of players, while the Indians' win came withSTEVEN DER-GARABEDIAN / out seven of their top SPECIAL TO THE OAKVILLE BEAVER players. Ky Tarbell (five BUZZING THE NET: Oakville's Colton points in Game 1) and Watkinson cuts toward the net to get a shot away in Hank Delisle (three Sunday's game against Akwesasne. The Indians won points) were among the 10-4 to even the best-of-five series 1-1. players who left the team Sunday to join before the game was 21 minutes the Iroquois Nationals at the world old. In Game 2, a hungrier under-19 field lacrosse championAkwesasne squad scored 23 sec- ships in Finland, and they won't be onds into the first period, then back for the remainder of the series. "At the end of the day, they were our top guys and had a lot of points, but who's to say we don't have guys who can step up?" Francis asked. "We had a lot of guys step up (in Game 2), guys scoring who don't normally score. We've got that depth." "They played with a lot more grit (Sunday)," Buzz head coach Sam Rook added, "and we needed to respond to it." Rook didn't necessarily think the Buzz needed to win both games at home in order to upset the highly-favoured Indians, however. "The only must-win game," Rook said, "is if when you lose, you're done." NOTES: Nakasuji had two goals and five assists Saturday. Keyan McQueen added a hat trick, while Alex Whiffing and Sam Neeb each scored twice. Greg Campbell and Colton Watkinson had Oakville's other markers. Ian Duffy earned the win. Mike Beirgard, Jake Jagodkin, Spencer Gallant and Whiffing scored for the Buzz in Game 2. PRICE MATC H GUARANTEE.
