www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, July 13, 2012 · 32 Ayorinde bolts to victory By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLEBEAVERSTAFF The result only confirmed what his coach already knew -- Ibrahim Ayorinde is the fastest kid in Ontario. "Every time he goes to a competition, he's marked," said Ayorinde's coach, Ted Neptune. "He's the kid to beat." A day before his 11th birthday, Ayorinde proved that by winning the Fastest Boy in Ontario 100-metre race at the Toronto International Track and Field Games on Wednesday at the University of Toronto's Varsity Track Centre. It wasn't easy, though. He chased down Nasiir Willabus-Stephen of Ajax down the stretch to win by one one-hundredth of a second, with a time of 13.24 seconds. Chasing down an opponent is nothing new for Ayorinde, who is usually still gaining speed when he crosses the line. "He's like (Usain) Bolt," Neptune said. "It takes him a while to get going, but once he does, he's like a train. You can't stop him." "I don't have a very good start," Ayorinde said, "but when I see people ahead of me, it makes me run faster." PAWEL DWULIT / TORONTO STAR The Oakville Legion Track and Field Club member wasn't too surprised by the challenge his opponent presented. Though they don't race in the same age group, he had seen Willabus-Stephen race at other meets and knew they posted similar times. Though his winning time was better than the 13.47 he ran to win the Hershey Track and Field North American finals last summer, it was still off his personal best of 13.09 seconds. However, competitors in Wednesday's race were not allowed to wear spikes, which led to slower times. There was one other difference with last night's race, held as part of the National Track League event. "Usually when you look in the stands, there are 150 or 200 people," Ayorinde said. "Last night there were 1,000 people." The Grade 6 student at MacLachlan College said the bigger crowd didn't really affect him, though. "I'm usually still nervous until they say `Go'," he said. "Then I just start running." And that's when, as Neptune said, "he is amazing." --Follow regional sports reporter Herb Garbutt on Twitter, @herbgarbutt TAKING FLIGHT: Oakville's Ibrahim Ayorinde (left) soars above the track as he passes Brock Timmerman on his way to victory at the Fastest Boy in Ontario race at the Toronto International Track Jason Turk shattered his personal best in and Field Games Wednesday night. Ayorinde won the 100-metre race with a time of 13.24 seconds, the javelin to claim the gold medal at the edging Ajax's Nasiir Willabus-Stephen by .01. Timmerman finished third. Ontario Legion Track and Field Championships in Oshawa. The Oakville Track Club/Athletiques International member bettered his previous best by more than nine metres with a throw of 51.57m to take the gold medal in the 15-andunder boys javellin. Nine metres was also his margin of victory over the silver medalists. Turk's victory qualifies him for the national Legion championships in August in Prince Edward Island. He will be the favourite if he can repeat his winning throw from provincials, which was longer than the winning throw at nationals in each of the last three years. The 15-year-old narrowly missed winning another medal at provincials with a personal (for ages 6-14) best of 5.91m in the long jump. That left him just four centimetres shy of the podium. Turk takes javelin gold, qualifies for nationals Caleb Thomas won a pair of medals, taking silver medal in the hammer throw with a toss of 43.57m and added a silver in the shot put (14.06m). Both were personal bests. Despite injurying his leg in the discus, Thomas still managed to finish fourth with a throw of 35.71m. Fourteen-year-old Mikayla Fedele won a bronze medal in the 1,200m, topping her previous best with a time of 3:55.40. Fedele was fifth in the 2,000m in 6:56.99 and also established a new personal best in the 800m to finish seventh in 2:28.16. Competing in her first club meet, eightyear-old Samantha Roy won a bronze medal in the tyke girls shot put at the Second Annual International Classic at York University. She also finished fourth in the 80m hurdles with a time of 20.21 seconds, which may be an Ontario record for eight-year-olds. l l a l b l t a o b o t f o r o f o n ! r i T o N m E n !
