Halton police said the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when a 76-year-old man, who was walking his dog along the trail, encountered another man also walking a dog. The two dogs engaged in a brief confrontation, but were quickly separated by the owners. The 76-year-old said during this confrontation he gave his dog a slap on the behind to get the dog under control. Both men left the area, but a short time later crossed paths on the trail again. Police said the 76-year-old stepped off the trail with his dog to let the other man pass, but the other man allegedly punched the victim in the face, causing the 76-year-old to fall on the ground. During the altercation, the victim said the man made statements that the victim should be ashamed of the way he treats his dog. The man then left the area, leaving the victim on the ground. The 76-year-old said he had a difficult time getting home because the fall tore open his knee, on which he recently had surgery. Police said the victim was taken to hospital where he received 23 stitches. An extensive police canvass was done in the area in an attempt to locate the suspect. On Saturday, July 14, the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau made an arrest after a man turned himself in at the 20 Division police station in Oakville. Graeme Griffith, 63, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm. He is scheduled to appear in a Milton court on Aug. 7.
