Halton Police don't believe the incidents are gang-related, but the marks left by the graffiti artists prove to be a nuisance for business owners who have to paint over the walls or fences or hire someone to do it. Det. Dwayne Perron says there has been a dramatic increase in the number of grafitti incidents in town. He says the artist often "leave signature of what they want to be known as on the street." The Main St. and Mill St. area of Georgetown has been a popular target with some businesses being hit multiple times. Graffiti has also been scattered throughout the downtown core. One downtown Georgetown business owner, who did not want her name published, said they have been hit three times. "It's a pain in the neck," she said. "We had to hire someone to come and paint it out. "You've got to paint it out or they will come back." She said the words "Joy" and "Cake" are two that have been spray-painted on their building. "You buy a building and you take care of it. To me it's vandalism and it costs you money," she said. She added, "you don't want to become one of those towns that have this stuff all over." "Every city experiences this every year," said Perron. "Typically you will get a prolific person that will hammer an area." Police ask area residents to be on the lookout for suspicious persons that could be involved in such incidents and to call police at 905-878-5511 ext. 2419.
