12 ·The IFP· Halton Hills ·Thursday, July 19, 2012 $150,000 accessibility renovations now complete at St. Alban's Acton Thanks to a $150,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in 2011, accessibility upgrades and the installation of an accessibility lift have been completed at St. Alban's Anglican Church in Acton, ensuring that their community meeting space is fully accessible to all. Joining members of the congregation at a ribbon-cutting ceremony recently following services were local MPP Ted Arnott and Gayle Wadden, the Chair of the Foundation's HaltonPeel Grant Review Team. "We're very grateful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for approving this generous grant, which has helped to make St. Alban's accessible to everyone," said Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott. In addition to the installation of the accessibility lift, upgrades included the raising of the sidewalk to the level of the primary entrance, installation of electronic door openers, motion activated light switches and redesign of internal hallways to allow enlarging of existing washroom facilities to make them fully wheelchair accessible. St. Alban's which also celebrated its 140th Anniversary on June 24th, serves as a free Food for Life and Refresh Foods food distribution centre every Thursday morning and partners with other community groups to host a free Community Dinner and Movie night on the third Friday of every month. The community meeting facilities are regularly used by a variety of organizations for meetings, exercise groups, youth training and counseling and charity fundraisers. Now with the work's completion, even more people will be able to participate at events held at the church, located on St. Alban's Drive. "The church facilities exist for the use of all throughout our region and it is our belief that none should ever feel excluded, by virtue of a physical, or any other form of disability," said Rev. Brian Galligan, the Priest at St. Alban's. "Since the renovations were completed using the grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, we are already receiving more requests from groups wanting to use our facilities and have seen a notable increase in participation from those persons who were previously unable to safely participate in the programs that are available here," he added.
