Seniors from both the Acton and Georgetown Senior Centres filled the gallery at the Civic Centre July 9 while Rick Chambers, president of the Georgetown District Seniors Centre, and Bev Jones, president of the Acton Seniors Recreation Centre, asked council to reconsider including the funding for expansion of the Acton Seniors Centre and constructing a new Georgetown Seniors Centre in the capital program. "We are experiencing a massive increase in the number of older adults in Canada and our community," said Chambers. He said the Georgetown Seniors Centre space on Guelph St. no longer suits the seniors' needs. Rental costs are expensive, he said, and there is insufficient parking. Space is also limited at the Acton Seniors Centre he said. Photo by Jon Borgstrom Cell tower opponents raise health concerns By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Potential health risks from a proposed cell tower in Norval were the key issues many area residents raised at an open house on the tower application Tuesday. About 45 area residents came out to the open house held at the Georgetown Seniors' Centre. Bell Mobility Inc. is proposing the installation of the 40 metre-tripole telecommunications tower on the Sheridan Nurseries property at 9674 Winston Churchill Blvd. REFINANCING? PURCHASING? The tower is needed to provide improved, dependable advanced wireless services to areas around the Norval community, it was stated on an information board at the open house. Bell also intends to remove existing communication equipment at Hwy. 7 and Heritage Rd. Norval resident Miranda Dieleman's property is right in front of the proposed tower location. She is opposed to the tower and "very upset" and worried about the impact of the electromagnetic radiation exposure from it. "Health concerns are obviously number one, and land value," said Dieleman, who has four kids who often ride their bikes in the woodlot at the rear of their property, close to where the tower would be. Harry Brander, whose farm is adjacent to the Sheridan land and tower location, is also opposed to the tower. He said he was "totally disgusted and shocked" about the proposed tower and mainly with Sheridan Nurseries.
