Sisters know no bounds in their bid to help By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Two Oakville teens are asking for the public's help in collecting 1,000 books for aboriginal youths in northern Ontario. Julia Mogus, 14, and her sister Emma, 13, have so far spent about $400 of their own money over the past year collecting close to 500 used books, which they eventually intend to send to the Nishnawbe Aski Nation. The pair, who will be attending White Oaks Secondary School next year, and who were both nominated as Ontario Junior Citizens of the Year in 2011, said the book drive is important as literacy skills among youths some northern Ontario aboriginal communities in northern Ontario are considerably lacking because of a shortage of books in their schools and community libraries. "We found out they are four to five years behind in literacy skills and that was a really big shock," said Julia. "We also found out there is a high suicide rate, which really scared us because there are 14-year-olds, people our age, who are killing themselves." The girls said access to reading and a better education is essential to providing the youths with hope for a better life and strived for his dreams," said Julia. "When you read, you get this imagination in your head and you always want to strive to get those things in your imagination to become real.
