Vol. 50 No. 90 "Using Communication To Build Better Communities" Breakfast ACCEPTional community partnership By John Bkila OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF What began as a pilot project during the 2010 Christmas season has since evolved to become a permanent program designed to help link people with developmental disabilities with jobs and the public workforce. Oakville's Evelyn Duffy and her husband, Matthew Bursey, are members of the ACCEPTional Foundation (AF) -- an organization that works to bring those with intellectual challenges together with opportunities to learn and hone job skills with the ultimate goal of securing employment. In fact, Bursey, inspired by his sister Erinn and her needs, founded AF in 2009. Born with Down syndrome, Erinn, like others facing developmental challenges, is finished school and has been struggling to gain meaningful employment, not just in terms of financial gain, but more importantly, for a sense of self worth. That is where Duffy and the Kuku Hut Corner came in. Along with her friend Amanda Flanagan, Duffy is co-owner of the business that imports fair trade jewelry, stoneware and other items from Africa in support of economic development. In 2010, Erinn worked alongside Duffy at the Kuku Hut Corner kiosk, which was stationed in Hopedale Mall from late November to Christmas Day. With the recent grand opening of a new Kuku Hut Corner store, at 359 Kerr St., Duffy and Bursey have been able to start the creation of a permanent program for Erinn to help train her to eventually find a job on her own.
