Tough start to You're going down series for Titans Two games into their best-of-five playoff series against the Owen Sound North Stars, the Oakville Titans find themselves on the brink of elimination. The Titans dropped the first two games of the Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) senior B series, losing 12-7 Friday in Oakville and then falling 9-8 in overtime Sunday in Owen Sound. Oakville will look to extend the second-round series this Friday when it hosts Game 3 at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, an 8:30 p.m. start. If necessary, Game 4 of the series is scheduled for Sunday in Owen Sound, with the fifth and deciding game slated for next Tuesday (July 31) in Oakville. The winner of the series will advance to face either St. Catharines or Brooklin in the OLA final. The Titans actually began the series with a flourish, jumping to a quick 4-0 lead in Game 1. Owen Sound scored eight of the next nine goals in the game, however, and coasted to the decisive win. Sunday, Oakville scored twice in the final 4:11 of regulation to force overtime but was outscored 2-1 in the extra session. Miller Rusbridge (two goals), Jeff Sehl, Mark White, Ken Coulson, Shane Scott and Dan Hamlett scored for the Titans in the series opener. Sehl potted a pair in Game 2, with Scott adding a goal and four helpers. Also scoring for the Titans Sunday were Stu Gordon, Nicholas Grasby, Callen Kitson, Kyle Aquin and Coulson. 19 · Wednesday, July 25, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @HALTON_PHOTOG TITANS WIN THE NORTH: Oakville Titans bantam players Jack Balin (second from left) and Hamza Khan (right, foreground) team up to tackle Clarington ball-handler Evan Reece Sunday at Bronte Athletic Field. Caliel Dingwell scored two touchdowns while D'Shon Dingwell and Nate Hayes also added majors to help the Titans down Clarington 27-14 and finish the Ontario Football Conference regular season atop the North Division. The Titans will host the Huronia Stallions in the OFC quarter-finals this Sunday at Bronte Athletic Field, an 11 a.m. kickoff. Longhorns corralled in Ottawa, but could still host first-round playoff game An Oakville Longhorns touchdown 39 seconds into Saturday's Northern Football Conference contest in Ottawa was not a sign of things to come. Oakville was held off the scoreboard the remainder of the contest while the host Invaders answered with 29 points of their own, defeating the Longhorns 29-7 and dropping Oakville to 3-4 with a week left in the NFC regular season. The Longhorns will host the Tri-City Outlaws (4-3) this Saturday at Bronte Athletic Field (a 7 p.m. start) in a game that will determine whether the Longhorns will finish fourth and have home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Oakville quarterback Kyle Sewell connected with Chris Hibbert for a 75-yard touchdown pass in the opening minute last week against Ottawa, but the Longhorns managed only 85 more passing yards and 52 rushing yards the rest of the way. Ottawa (6-2) racked up 211 rushing yards and added 252 more through the air to easily overcome 140 yards in penalties. Hibbert finished the game with 148 receiving yards. Sewell completed 10 of 21 passes but was picked off three times. Lincoln Downs led the Oakville defence with seven tackles. The Longhorns and Outlaws clash is one of several meaningful games this weekend as the NFC concludes the regular season. Sarnia (4-3) visits the Toronto Raiders (2-5), while Sault Ste. Marie (2-5) visits Sudbury in other NFC action. The Toronto Titans (8-0) are locked into top spot in the eight-team league, Ottawa is guaranteed a second-place finish and Sudbury is assured a last-place finish and first-round visit to Toronto. The rest of the standings are subject to change this weekend.
