However, it is equally important to focus on food safety practices that will protect children from food borne illness and other dangers that can be associated with a packed lunch. "A few simple precautions can make a tremendous difference to your child's health," says James Savage, executive vice president at Western Financial Group, an insurance and financial services company committed to protecting the health and well-being of families throughout western Canada. He shares these reminders from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA): · Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water before handling food. · Keep countertops and utensils clean and sanitized. · Clean the lunchbox after every use. · Wash and dry raw fruits and vegetables before packing them. · If you are packing perishable items use frozen freezer packs to keep them at or below 4 degrees Celsius, and use an insulated lunchbox. · Hot foods should be kept at or above 60 degrees Celsius, so use insulated containers. · Remember not to pack peanuts or foods containing peanuts or peanut oil as other children may be highly allergic to these foods.
