Women's soccer team in quarters Continued from page 18 19 · Wednesday, August 1, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com "We train to be the best in the world, so it's hard at times to stay in the boat, but you can't always chase crews and base everything on what another crew's doing. Sooner or later, it can go bad," said Csima, who was both forward and goalie as a rep hockey player before taking up rowing during his very first week of nursing studies at McMaster University. "We have to focus and execute, and it's a lot easier to say than to do. We felt the pressure in the heats. For six of us, it was our first Olympic race. Nothing really felt much different in the heats, but definitely we were much more confident going into the second race that we were going to take charge, we were going to take control of this regatta." Pressure can manifest itself in a lot of ways and, without dwelling too much on another boat, Csima hinted at how it might work negatively. "The Germans have never really had a ton of pressure put on them by any one crew," he said. "People have taken stabs at them, and credit to them because they've made it so nobody can put pressure on them over the last 250 metres of the race. I don't think anyone's invincible. Especially when you have an Olympic final once every four years, everyone reacts differently. We're going to put ourselves in a position so that if they don't execute 100 per cent, then we'll be there to take it." -- Steve Milton, Metroland Media Group Matheson helps soccer team advance The Canadian women's soccer team, including Oakville's Diana Matheson, rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw with Sweden yesterday (Tuesday) morning, helping the team advance to the Olympic quarter-finals. Canada finished third in its pool with a record of 1-1-1. Sweden took first place in the pool with a record of 1-0-2 while Japan was second with the same mark. Canada opened the tournament with 2-1 loss to the reigning Women's World Cup champion, Japan. Afterward, Matheson said the team would need to do better. "Moral victories aren't going to get us into the next round," she said. Matheson backed up her words with a strong performance in the Diana Matheson next game, a 3-0 win over South Africa. She set up the game-winning goal, threading a pass through the legs of a South African defender to Melissa Tancredi just seven minutes into the game. Matheson had two good scoring chances of her own, hitting the crossbar both times. Yesterday, Sweden scored in the 14th minute and again two minutes later. Tancredi pulled Canada within one a couple of minutes before the half and then tied the game in the 84th minute. Canada will face Great Britain in Friday's quarterfinals, with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. eastern. Canada is ranked seventh in the world while Great Britain is ninth. --with files from Torstar News Service HOME IMPROVEMENTS 905-845-3824 ext. 284 jlangero@oakvillebeaver.com ALUMINUM E.K. Oakville concluded the regular season Saturday at Bronte Athletic Field with a 39-0 loss to the Tri-City Outlaws, dropping the Longhorns to 3-5 and a sixth-place finish in the league standings. That means a first-round meeting with the third-place Outlaws (5-3) next Saturday, this time in Waterloo. Tri-City outgained the Longhorns 483-211 in the regularseason finale and also forced five turnovers, including three interceptions of Oakville quarterback Kyle Sewell. The Outlaws led 18-0 at halftime. Oakville's rushing attack was perhaps the lone bright spot on the evening. Jermaine DeCosta ran for 82 yards on 11 carries and Dan Seymour added 46 more yards on 11 attempts as the Longhorns finished with 148 yards on the ground. Robin Medeiros led the Oakville defence with six tackles. The Longhorns actually finished the regular season in a three-way tie with the Sault Ste. Marie Steelers and Toronto Raiders. Fewest points allowed was used as the tiebreaker, meaning the Steelers finished fifth and Raiders finished seventh. Next weekend's other first-round matchups see the Sudbury Spartans visit the Toronto Titans, the Raiders travel to face the Ottawa Invaders and the Sarnia Imperials host the Steelers.
