www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, August 8, 2012 · 8 Teachers must do their part: Oakville MPP By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn defended his government when asked about Education Minister Laurel Broten's announcement that she and Premier Dalton McGuinty are determined to open schools this September -- with new contracts in place with staff by Aug. 31. "I'm still hopeful that the school boards and the teachers will be able to reach an agreement based roughly on the framework that we were able to achieve with OECTA (Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association)," he said. "I think that's reasonable. I think there was some give and take. I think the taxpayers benefitted as a result of that agreement and I think the teachers benefited as a result of that agreement. The OECTA teachers certainly earn my respect." When asked if giving teachers and school boards until the end of the month to sign new contracts was enough time, Flynn said bargaining has already been taking place for five months at the board level. "We've been able to reach an agreement with OECTA, so we've proven that if reasonable people put their heads together, we can come up with a solution that's in the best interest of parents, teachers and students," he said. The Oakville MPP added he wants the parties to take the necessary time to get the right deal signed during the currently sensitive economic times. Flynn also noted that the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has spent only one hour at the bargaining table during the five months of negotiations with the "Everybody is cutting back Province, which to do their little share and raises concerns abut the union's I think teachers would agree, commitment for given the fact that they are the signing a fair best paid in Canada already, a new deal. 5.5 per cent increase on top "At the end of that would be unfair of all this, I want Ontario teachto the taxpayers of this ers to still be the province." best paid in the country because Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn I think we have the best teachers in the country. I think we have the best schools in the country. But, there are some financial realities we simply have to face up to," he said. He added that in current economic times, "When I look at the activity of the leader- everyone needs to give up a little bit. ship of some of the other unions, of CUPE, "Everybody is cutting back to do their ETFO and OSSTF, I see entirely different little share and I think teachers would actions.
