Raccoon gets head stuck in sewer grate It may never be known how an adult raccoon managed to get his head wedged into a sewer grate, but the Oakville & Milton Humane Society was happy to get him out -- with some help from Town of Oakville employees. Humane society officers, called by a local resident on July 31, recognized more help was needed upon arriving at the scene. Town staff were then called and were able to lift the grate cover. Once it was off, however, it was clear the SUBMITTED PHOTO animal was still in trouble as his head was rescue: This raccoon was rescued and later stuck in the grate so humane society animal released after getting his head caught in a sewer grate. health technicians went to work. The raccoon was sedated and using dish soap, the team gently rocked the animal's head until it was free of the grate. The raccoon was cleaned up and transported to the Toronto Wildlife Centre for assessment. Upon receiving a clean bill of health, the animal was released Aug. 2. "We didn't know how long he had been stuck, and whether he'd sustained any damage to his head or neck," said one of the officers. "We wanted to be sure the little guy was okay before releasing him." The humane society receives no government funding and relies on the support of the community to care for every animal in need. 11 · Wednesday, August 8, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com it all started when my lungs stopped working... The feeling of not being able to breathe is one I will never forget. After being rushed to my hospital here in Oakville I was quickly diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. The disease shut down my kidneys and put me in a coma for 15 days and in the Intensive Care Unit for two months. If it wasn't for the life-saving equipment in our hospital, I would not be here today. Brigitte Elise Photography Each and every year, our hospital needs hundreds of pieces of new equipment that will save lives and improve the lives of all us here in Oakville. Every piece is critical and every piece needs to be funded by our community. It all starts here with your help. Please give generously.
