Town eyes federal cash to upgrade local facilities The Town of Oakville hopes to get federal funding to return several local community facilities to their former glory. Town council voted Monday to approve an application to the new Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). If successful, Oakville could get $1 million to rehabilitate the Joshua's Creek Arenas, River Oaks Community Centre, Forster and Lakeside parks and Kinoak Arena. "Our community's quality of life is a priority for council. For this reason, the Town is committed to improving its aging infrastructure and facilities," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "Sites in need of repair and selected for our application are `shovelready' and would not otherwise proceed in 2012 without this funding." Of all the facilities, Joshua's Creek Arenas has been dubbed top priority as it requires updating to both ice pads and its seating area. It also needs accessibility improvements to washrooms, sinks and showers. Next in line is the River Oaks Community Centre. It needs its Community Room refurbished and requires accessibility upgrades to washrooms, change rooms, and counters in lobby, fitness and concession areas, as well as doors. Forster Park needs to have its washroom upgraded and should be more accessible. Lakeside Park needs similar improvements -- in compliance with heritage attributes. Kinoak Arena needs cash for a new chiller, doors and upgrades to seating, change rooms and washrooms. The federal government announced the CIIF on July 5 with approximately $50 million earmarked for Ontario projects. All grant applications must be endorsed by local councils and submitted by Aug. 24. The funds are not for new projects but rather rehabilitating or improving existing community infrastructure by March 31, 2014. The Town hopes to hear this fall if it will get some of the cash. 7 · Thursday, August 16, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com "Sites in need of repair and selected for our application are `shovel-ready' and would not otherwise proceed in 2012 without this funding."
