Hope in the City Aug. 22 The Canadian Cancer Society Halton Unit along with 400 women from the region will be fighting women's cancers in style next Wednesday (Aug. 22) at the annual Hope and the City fundraiser. Held at the IVY Bar and Kitchen, 3330 South Service Rd. in Burlington, the fundraiser is a 19 years of age and older event with proceeds supporting women's cancer research (breast, ovarian, cervical, uterine and vulvar) funded by the Society. Tickets cost $50 each and can be purchased online at www.cancer.ca/ hopeburlington. Guests to the fundraiser will be greeted by paparazzi as they walk the `pink' carpet to the main entrance, receive a Swag-bag and an opportunity to be pampered at glamour stations set up by local businesses. It is estimated 1,350 Canadian women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer, while 390 are expected to die from the disease, this year, according to a press release. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends two ways to prevent and detect cervical cancer early: get a Pap test and get one of two vaccines for the human papillomavirus (HPV) -- as HPV can lead to an infection in the cervix, it is listed as a main risk factor in developing cervical cancer. Burlington resident Shannon Pethick will speak at this year's event. As a result of her treatment for cervical cancer, Pethick, 34, went into menopause and as a result lost her ability to conceive children. Since being diagnosed, she has become a cervical screening advocate and speaks about the importance of Pap tests. "When I think back, having a Pap test could have prevented my cancer and I'd be 19 · Friday, August 17, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com able to have kids," she said. "I know Pap tests are not the most pleasant thing to experience, but going through radiation and chemotherapy is far worse. "I want to shout it from the rooftops that women need to schedule regular Pap tests with their doctor." In March 2011, Pethick's doctors gave her the news that she was cancer-free.
