One student representative was selected from each elementary and secondary school in the public school system to receive the Student Excellence Award. The honour is given to students who demonstrate outstanding qualities in more than one of the following areas: academic, vocational, athletic, self-improvement, community work, citizenship and student leadership. Numerous Oakville students were honoured at this year's ceremony. This is the first installment profiling the local recipients. The remaining recipients will be published in future issues of The Oakville Beaver. All photos and profiles were supplied to the Beaver by the Halton District School Board. · Cameron Doherty, Abbey Lane: Cameron was selected because he excels academically, has exceptional work habits and is a leader on student council. He sets up for school assemblies, plays on our volleyball team and sets up photos to run on our school television. Cameron uses the Tribes Agreements in his daily interactions with students and staff and is respected by his peers. · Alexandra Moyssakos, Brookdale: Alexandra has earned the respect of both her teachers and peers and demonstrates excellent leadership skills on an on-going basis. She is self-motivated and has proven her ability to effectively balance her diverse extracurricular activities with her academics. Alexandra's positive attitude towards her academics, peers, teachers and school and her desire to excel beyond expectations has made her Brookdale's choice for our 2012 "Student of Excellence." · Catherine Ostapovych, Captain R. Wilson: Catherine demonstrates excellence in all aspects of school life. As a member of the Leadership Council, she demonstrates her school spirit as she helps organize exciting events around the school. She shares her love for reading with other students through the Red Maple Reading Club and demonstrates her excellent musical skills as a member the concert band. Catherine is a kind, caring and positive role model to all of her peers. · Ella Griffin, E.J. James: Ella's positive attitude and willingness to undertake any challenge that comes her way, puts her in the `stellar' category. Ella excels in academics, athletics and in the arts. She is a wonderful role model for younger students at E.J. James and is a leader among her peers. · Maegan Mustafa, Eastview: Maegan is kind, compassionate and infinitely patient. These qualities shine through in her studies, social interactions, and volunteer work. She is a strong role model within the school, continuously leading by example and displaying her dedication to any task she encounters. Maegan is brave enough to stand up for what she believes in, and does not shy away from sharing thoughts and ideas even when Falgarwood. Her positive attitude shines through in many different areas within the school. She has high academic standards for herself and holds a place on the school's honour roll. She is actively involved in a variety of clubs including Spirit Council, Me to We, Yearbook and is a French tutor for her peers. Tavneet's athletic perseverance enhances the school's basketball, volleyball, cross-country, track and soccer teams. Tavneet is a great student role model at Falgarwood. · Michelle Armstrong, Forest Trail: Michelle Armstrong has always been a passionate member of the Forest Trail School community. Her leadership extends to all areas of academic and extra-curricular life, including athletics, student parliament, Halton Intermediate Winds, Senior Concert Band, Green Team, and Yearbook. She led the Me to We toy and food drive in support of a local community centre. Her kindness and compassion are matched by her school spirit and global awareness. · Eunice Tunggal, Gladys Speers: Eunice is an exemplary student in the classroom and is an honest, helpful, and caring citizen of the school. Beyond the classroom, Eunice has shown her enthusiasm and leadership skills in a number of activities including the junior volleyball team, P.R.O.P.S, a group of junior students who run games for other students at recess, and as a Kindergarten helper. · Raisa Ahmed, Heritage Glen: Raisa consistently goes above and beyond what is expected and has a kind and generous spirit and heart. Her contributions to the Heritage Glen Student Council and the regional Student Parliament have been outstanding. Raisa was selected because of her academic achievements and her student leadership at the school. She sets high goals for herself and is always respectful to teachers, friends and other students. · Hunter Anderson, James W. Hill: Hunter is a dedicated student who works diligently to maintain honour roll status. In the classroom he is prepared and positive. His mature focus and adherence to the Tribes Agreements allow him to lead by example; demonstrating respect for all of his peers and teachers. During difficult tasks, he perseveres and encourages others to do the same. Hunter is always willing to help, without looking to be recognized for his efforts. Whether he is in the classroom or on the volleyball or basketball court, he is a silent leader who motivates others to strive for a strong finish. · Wendy Dong, Joshua Creek: Wendy Dong was chosen as the Joshua Creek Student of Excellence due to her strong commitment to academics and co-curricular activities. During class time she is an actively engaged student always willing to help others, and is often found at nutrition breaks taking part in the Musical Rehearsal, Bell Choir or Red Maple Club.
