Donated farm now up for sale By JULIA LE Metroland Media Group A farm property in Hornby that was donated to the Salvation Army by the James Snow family in 2006 is on the market. A "for sale" sign has been placed in front of Pineland Farm where the late James Snow and his family lived for 47 years before moving to Milton. The property, located at 8300 Trafalgar Road North, is being listed for $1.995 million. Snow, a former Minister of Communications and Transportation who served in the Ontario legislative assembly from 1967 to 1985 and died four years ago at the age of 79, had originally donated the property to Salvation Army in a gesture to support one of his favourite charities. Snow, who also established the James and Barbara Snow Family Fund, which is a designated fund that supports the Oakville, Milton and Georgetown hospitals as well as the Lions Foundation, Dog Guides of Canada and two churches in the Milton area, was a firm believer in giving back to the community. Scott Barrett, the Salvation Army's divisional secretary of business administration, said after years of entertaining a number of ideas of what they could use the property for, the Salvation Army came to a decision to sell the property because the organization doesn't have any viable use for it. The organization had originally hoped to use the farm as a home for physically challenged and disabled persons, housing up to 10 people and to also run a day program for about 30 people. However, years of trying to get the appropriate funds to develop the programming at Pineland Farm proved unsuccessful. In the event that a suitable use couldn't be found for the property, the Salvation Army and the Snow family had agreed that it could be sold with proceeds benefiting the Salvation Army. Snow's son James said it's unfortunate that they weren't able to bring the plan of making it a home for physically challenged and disabled persons to fruition, but added the outcome was anticipated. James, a real estate agent with Century 21 in Milton, said he's hoping the property, where his father ran a cattle business for 10 years before being appointed as an Ontario cabinet minister in 1971, will be sold to a buyer who'll use the land much as his parents did-- as a farm. The property has a 7,000 sq. ft. home and two barns totaling 15,500 sq. ft. "It was originally 100 acres and 90 acres of it was donated to the (Halton) County and province to reforest familiar farm fields in the `50s," said James, adding that he has fond memories growing up there. "It's a great place to live," he said. Colliers real estate agent Matthew Johnson said the property has been nicely maintained by the Salvation Army throughout the years.
