Public school back Tuesday Catholic board students return to class Wednesday Summer is coming to an end for school children. This Tuesday, students in the Halton public school board will be returning to their classrooms, while their counterparts at the Catholic board will return Wednesday. Both boards are excited to welcome their students back to class and both have some additions this year. In Oakville, the full-day, early-learning kindergarten program has been expanded to the following schools: Our Lady of Peace, St. Andrew, St. Dominic, St. Joan of Arc, and St. Mary Catholic elementary schools and Captain R. Wilson, Eastview, Gladys Speers, Post's Corners and River Oaks public schools. The program has also been added to several schools in Burlington, Milton and Georgetown. A complete list of all the schools at the board with the full-day program can be found at www.hcdsb.org. The kindergartners aren't the only ones with new programs. The Catholic school board is now offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program to Grades 11 and 12 students at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School. New Oakville schools this year include St. Mary Catholic Elementary School, opening its doors to approximately 350 students and Garth Webb Secondary School, which will accommodate 1,200 students. New schools are also opening in other areas of the region. "We thank our facilities staff for preparing our 101 elementary and secondary schools for the arrival of our 57,000 students on the first day," said David Euale, director of education for the Halton District School Board, in a news release. "We are especially delighted to have the opportunity to open three schools for the beginning of the 2012-13 school year." St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School underwent renovations this summer, many of which have been completed. However, some areas of the school may be restricted while the remainder of the work is being carried out. For students riding the bus, all information -- such as stop times, locations and route numbers -- is available at www.haltonbus.ca. "We look forward to welcoming our students back as the new school year begins," said Michael Pautler, director of education for the Halton Catholic District School Board, in a news release. "To the students and families that are new to our school board, we are delighted that you have chosen to join our Catholic learning community, and we are confident that you will soon come to appreciate why Halton Catholic is recognized across the province as an exceptional school system."
