Halton Region eyeing bigger-size blue boxes Ward 4 Councillor Allan Elgar believes Halton residents would pay for lids By Julia Le METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP Halton communities could see bigger blue boxes available to them to curb overflow problems and blue box litter on windy days. Wednesday, Halton regional councillors approved the 22-gallon blue box as the new standard size for recycling during the Region's planning and public works committee meeting. It still must go to Regional council Wednesday, Sept. 12 for final approval. Regional staff presented a report detailing how several other municipalities have been incorporating the larger blue box container into their curbside collection programs. The original size, which was incorporated when the blue box program was first implemented in the late 1980s, was an 18-gallon blue box. The report revealed how a number of the taller blue boxes are already in use by some Halton residents. Halton Region report on recycling blue boxes with affixed lids that secure recyclable material prior to its collection. The Region recently investigated a 22-gallon container with an attached lid that's currently only being manufactured to serve residents in Montreal. Staff is hoping to find a manufacturer that can deliver the container at a competitive price. Rob Rivers, Halton's director of waste management, told the committee the 18-gallon blue box costs about $5 to manufacture, the 22-gallon blue box costs about $6-$7, and depending on the volume and size, the blue box with an affixed lid could cost $15-$20. Staff is proposing that the containers with lids be made available to Halton residents at their cost. Another report will be presented later in the month, which will detail how the containers will be distributed, the cost and the financial implications. Oakville Ward 4 Town and Regional Councillor Allan Elgar said he believes residents will be willing to buy blue boxes with lids to put an end to blue box litter on windy days.
