The Arthritis Society says that the common joint disorder costs the Canadian economy almost $33 billion annually. However, a recent poll conducted by the organization indicates that many people don't see joint pain as a serious health priority. September is Arthritis Awareness Month, and this is one of the facts about the debilitating condition it wants people to know. "Arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability in the country," said Joanne Simons, executive director of The Arthritis Society, Ontario Division, in a news release. "With September being Arthritis Awareness Month, our goal is to bring the common misconceptions about arthritis to the forefront, so that Canadians better understand the disease and seek treatment and support. Arthritis is not just aches and pains; it is not just an inevitable part of getting older." According to the society's poll, more than a quarter of Canadians reported that if they had joint pain, they would not view it as a health priority. "People who do not consider joint pain a health priority are at risk of developing life-altering symptoms down the road, including severe pain and inflammation, fatigue, joint damage, loss of mobility, potential surgery, physical and emotional fatigue and possible psychological effects," said Janet Yale, president and CEO of The Arthritis Society, in the release. The society has launched a new website, www.arthritis.ca, which offers visitors customized information on such things as types of arthritis, options for treatment and expert advice. The website has tips and resources for people to better manage daily activities and to take charge of their disease. The society provides education, programs and support to 4.6 million Canadians living with arthritis and their families. For information, visit www.arthritis.ca.
