UWO challenge is on By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Town of Oakville staff, local labour groups and businesses literally pulled together for United Way of Oakville (UWO) Thursday, as it kicked off its 2012 campaign to raise $4.2 million. More than 200 people gathered at the Oakville Transit Facility at 430 Wyecroft Rd., to support the start of the campaign, which was marked by the second annual bus pull. "Like the bus pull, it will take all of us pulling together to reach our goal and provide support for children and families, isolated seniors and people struggling with life's challenges," said Brad Park, United Way of Oakville CEO. Crowds cheered as 11 teams competed to see which could pull an Oakville Transit bus 34 metres in the least amount of time. The teams of eight could be seen gritting their teeth and straining every muscle to get the bus rolling as supporters applauded and shouted encouragement. In the end, the Oakville Hydro team stood victorious with a time of 18.75 seconds. "It was the teamwork, the technique, everybody pulling at the same time," said Mario Hernandez of the Oakville Hydro team. "It was heavy, man. It was not easy. I was 7 · Friday, September 14, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com pulling together: At feeling the weight at the beginning, but as soon as you get the speed up a little bit... It was good to be here and we'll be here for the United Way again next year." The CAW Local 707 team came in second with a time of 18.97 seconds while the Oakville Transit Team 1 came in third with a time of 19.03 seconds. The group from GE Water received the spirit award for their particularly enthusiastic supporters who cheered on their team with a cowbell. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton spoke about the number of people who came out to support the UWO, which invests in a support network of 33 agencies that, in turn, help more than 30,000 people in this community. "There is a fight going on south of us over what kind of society they want to have. I hear they've framed the ballot question as to whether we're all in this together or you're on your own," said Burton. "Today is only one wonderful example that this is a town where the community really believes in pulling together." Although Thursday marked the official beginning of the 2012 campaign, fundraising is already off to what organizers called a `great start' thanks to Pacesetters who have submitted donations and/or pledges prior to Sept. 1.
