Mastantuono's goal was the first in Garth Webb school history as the Chargers won their first-ever game, defeating the Spartans 8-0 in junior girls' field hockey play. Chargers dominant in first-ever game By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR Garth Webb himself would have been proud. In the first-ever sports game for the new Oakville high school named after the recently-deceased World War II hero, the Garth Webb Chargers junior girls field hockey team routed Milton's Craig Kielburger Spartans 8-0 Monday at Bronte Athletic Field. Chargers co-coach Jennifer Parrish said the team was determined to begin its school's sporting history on a positive note. "There was a legacy to be started," Parrish said. "Garth Webb was someone who really loved sports. The last thing we said to the girls before they took the field was that (Garth Webb) had a passion for sports and that if he could have been here, he would have been here to cheer us on." Nicole Mastantuono earned her place in school history by scoring the Chargers' first-ever goal, beating the Kielburger netminder eight minutes into the game. "It's actually really cool. This is the first sports team to go out in Garth Webb colours, and to get the CURLING Affordable Sport/Recreation NEW! 7 Week Trial Membership $ (Sliders, Brushes provided; Clean Running Shoes required) 125 (including HST) Daytime Curling Only Special Rate Monday - Friday (9:00 am - 5:30 pm) Try the Sport/Recreation of Curling Free during Qualified Instructors on hand Saturday, September 22nd · 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm OPEN HOUSE 224 Allan Street, Oakville (Parking off Reynolds) Oakville Curling Club For membership and further information, please call See full Home Improvements section in The Oakville Beaver every Thursday 905-844-6982 our web site: www.oakvillecurlingclub.com Our e-mail address: oakvillecurlingclub@on.aibn.com first goal was really amazing," the 14-year-old said. "We had to represent our school in a positive way." Alysia Bonner (two), Hannah Wade, Liza Mishko, Alyssa Yourkin, Brooklyn Hanson and Amy Tarajos also scored for the Chargers. Charlotte Revell recorded her school's first-ever shutout, though the most action she saw was when many of her teammates jumped on her after the final whistle. Making the dominant showing by the Chargers all the more impressive is the fact that the game was the first official field hockey contest for all of their players. Mastantuono said there are no rep players on the team, and all but Mishko are in Grade 9. "We're all new. We just started last week. We've come a long way already," Mastantuono said. But just because they are new to the sport and representing a new school does not mean the Chargers can't be successful this year, Parrish said. "Mathematically, it's not as favourable. We're not drawing from a population of (1,800). We're drawing from (400)," said the coach. "But you get kids who really want to win it and are willing to play together and practise hard, and there's no reason (you can't win). Everybody's seen Rudy and every other Disney movie out there. "I think it's important to have success early, to build the school," she added. "There are lots of kids who could have chosen to come to Garth Webb but chose Abbey Park, White Oaks or Loyola. When they see we're competing with everybody else, they may see we're not an inferior school. Not only are we new and shiny and clean, we're also a competitor in everything we do."
