Premier Dalton McGuinty spoke about the coming ban following a tour of a cancer clinic at a Toronto hospital. He said it is needed to protect young people from skin cancer, which the Canadian Cancer Society says they are 75 per cent more likely to get, if they use tanning beds. Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn called the ban long overdue. MPP Kevin Flynn "I think (the Canadian Cancer Society) thinks younger people are especially susceptible to both the tanning itself and the damage it causes to the skin and also to the marketing that is aimed at them that says you have to have bronze oily skin to be cool. It's a joke, it's unhealthy," said Flynn. "I think, in the past, the industry has been able to convince the powers that be at the provincial and the federal level that nothing needs to be done. Clearly the medical evidence is to the contrary." Instead of introducing its own legislation, Flynn said the Liberal government would adopt a private members' bill brought forward by New Democrat France Gelinas, which seeks to limit tanning bed use to adults. It has become an autumn tradition for Canadians as hundreds of thousands across the country take part in the run every year. Organizers estimate the local fundraiser raised more than $110,000 for cancer research.
