www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, September 20, 2012 · 16 Demolition rubble and debris scattered across property Continued from page 15 It had a March 1, 2012 deadline to have the structure demolished, rubble removed, and the site leveled. By March 12, the structure had been knocked down, but the rubble remains. "We did have a property standards order issued on this," said Ferreira. "It was appealed to the appeals committee and they extended the time to get rid of all the rubble to Aug. 1 of this year. They didn't clean it up, so charges have been laid and the matter is before the courts. The first appearance is Oct. 9." Ferreira said if Creekbank is found guilty of not complying with the Town's bylaws, it could be fined as much as $100,000. "Ultimately, we are hoping to get compliance," said Ferreira. For residents like Jacqueline Vanbetlehem, the clean up of the site cannot be fast enough. "The site is not only a blemish on Oakville's usually pristine landscape, it is dangerous," she said. "I find it appalling that the local developer disregards the needs of the community to which it owes its success." A Creekbank representative said the delays in developing the area have been frustrating for them as well, but said hold ups of this kind are not uncommon for projects of this scale. Creekbank, he said, is making every effort to get the project going again and is looking forward to moving forward as soon as possible. An Oakville Beaver photographer who attended the site late last month found the property unsecured with gaps in the fencing. The former hotel's pool is still in place, filled with water and garbage. Metal, rebar, stones and cement lay strewn across the property. This is not the first time attention has been drawn to the 360 Oakville Place Dr., site. In April 2011, the Oakville Fire Department was called to the vacant hotel after a fire was started in the basement. Ferreira said the bylaw department was called to the vacant hotel 58 times in 2009, when property ownership was listed under developer Legend Creek Homes, for issues related to graffiti, the property being in disrepair, stagnant water in the pool and people trespassing and even living within the structure. "We had reports of people moving in there and bringing in bedding and setting small fires in order to keep warm," said Ferreira. "They actually hired a security company to monitor the property for several months in order to ensure people didn't squat in there and in order to keep it safe." your online source for FREE online coupons Save on Grocery, Health and Beauty products Save $ · · · · Get your coupons at Save.ca!
