The organization's Pink Ribbon Days, running throughout Halton Region from Thursday, Sept. 27 to Sunday, Sept. 30, will see volunteers collect donations and distribute pink ribbons to raise funds and awareness for breast health. The cancer society needs volunteers to assist as Pink Ribbon ambassadors and site co-ordinators for the campaign. The ambassadors are needed for two-anda-half hour shifts at various retail stores in the region to collect donations and to hand out ribbons. Volunteers are asked to sign up with a friend, family member or neighbour for selling shifts. Ambassadors will be asked to engage the public and encourage people to make a donation. The society said the program is a great volunteer opportunity for service clubs, church groups and high school students who need service hours. Site co-ordinators will act as the main point of contact for volunteers. They will oversee one retail venue and the volunteers scheduled on a particular day. They will deliver and distribute supplies to the volunteers, occasionally check in on the site to ensure there are sufficient supplies and return materials to the Halton Unit at the end of the day. Site coordinators must be able to drive and have access to a reliable vehicle. For a listing of the shifts and locations currently available, visit ccshaltonunit.wix. com/pinkribbon. Give the Gift of Life Walk at Bronte Creek Park Saturday The Kidney Foundation of Canada is asking people to get moving for others in their community. The organization is hosting its Give the Gift of Life Walk at Bronte Creek Provincial Park on Saturday, Sept. 22. Money raised will support people in the community affected by kidney disease. The Oakville event will be one out of 40 taking place in communities across the province. Nearly 100,000 Ontario residents depend on life-sustaining dialysis treatments several times a week and more than 1,000 are waiting for a kidney transplant. The organization notes that many people also live with reduced kidney function that may have gone undetected. The Kidney Foundation works to improve the lives of all people affected by kidney disease through research, government advocacy, peer support, education and programs. "It's a very difficult time for patients and their families as they make dialysis part of their routine or find themselves waiting for a kidney transplant," said Terry Young, president of The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Ontario Branch, in a news release. The walk starts at 11 a.m. Registration opens at 10 a.m. For more information about the walk, visit www.kidneywalk.ca. 4 OUT OF 5 PEOPLE WITH DIABETES DIE OF HEART DISEASE. Better your odds.
