www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, September 20, 2012 · 32 Half marathon Sunday Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities will converge in south Oakville once again this weekend for the sixth annual Oakville Half Marathon. Sunday's races will include the 10K run and 10K student relay, the half marathon and the Whole Foods Market 2K fun run/walk. The 10K run and 10K student relays will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the half marathon at 7:45 a.m. and the Whole Foods Market 2K fun run/walk at 7:50 a.m. All races will begin at Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W. The routes will then continue east on Lakeshore Rd. until the south side of Suffolk Ave., where the 10K runners will separate from the half marathon runners. Half marathon runners will continue east to Morrison Rd., loop around and join the 10K runners once again on the north side of Suffolk Ave. The course then travels west on Rebecca St., south on Jones St. and east back to Coronation Park, where the half marathon and 10K runners will merge with the Whole Foods Market 2K participants. The Whole Foods Market 2K route is a scenic loop within the Coronation Park boundaries. Participants in that event will share the same finish line as the half marathon and 10K runners. There will be celebrations at the finish line, featuring an awards ceremony as well as entertainment from Toronto-based band Boomerang. The 10K student relay is a new event to the Oakville Half Marathon. Runners are required to pick up their race kits at the Runner's Expo, slated for Saturday at Coronation Park. The expo will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 6 p.m. Local residents make up about 40 per cent of the field, which continues to grow each year. In previous years, the Oakville Half Marathon has also hosted runners from across the GTA and Ontario as well as from the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Bermuda and Switzerland. The Oakville Half Marathon supports several local charities each year. This year's featured charities include the Oakville Hospital Foundation, Colorectal Canser Association of Canada, Oakville YMCA, Kerr Street Ministries, Reach for the Rainbow, and Crohn's and Colitis Foundation -- Halton Chapter. Participants are encouraged to raise money for one or several of these charities, but may also collect pledges for a charity of their own choosing.
