Fareshare hopes drive will fill empty shelves By John Bkila OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF As Thanksgiving Day approaches, Oakville's Fareshare Food Bank is asking residents to help feed those in need with donations for this season's food drive and help replenish the food bank's shelves. "The Easter 2012 Food Drive had the poorest results for a food drive in many years. The food bank is as empty as I have ever seen it," said Fareshare volunteer president Nancy Bromberg. With that said, Bromberg notes the monthly average (as of the end of August) of the number of families helped by the food bank is 357, approximately half of which are children -- year-to-date, that's a decrease of 4.5 per cent (about 17 families). "We don't know why there is a decrease this year and in 2011 there was a 2.5 per cent increase," said Bromberg. "I expect the average will increase by the end of the year." Bromberg explains that there are likely a variety of reasons for the fluctuation in the number of families the food bank serves every year -- in fact, probably a different reason for each family. "We are always pleased when there is a decrease in the need for the help offered by the food bank, but experience has shown that these decreases have always been temporary," she said. "This is the reason we are working so hard this Thanksgiving season to stock our warehouse to the rafters, so we can continue to meet the needs of our clients. The good citizens of Oakville have never let us down and we are counting on them again this year." Beginning on Saturday (Sept. 29), the Thanksgiving 3 · Friday, September 28, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com · Powdered baby formula "The powdered baby formula is particularly low," said Bromberg. "The formula used by many Oakville mothers is Enfamil A+. We are also in low supply of infant fruit and diapers." Fareshare Food Bank also accepts monetary donations to help buy perishable foods for local families in need. Residents can drop off their donations at Fareshare on 1240 Speers Rd. between 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday to Saturday, as well as at all Oakville fire stations, and in all Oakville supermarkets where collection bins have been provided by Fareshare.
