Police said there are numerous variations of the scam, but generally the scammer tells the resident they are a representative of a computer service or repair firm and profess to know the resident is experiencing computer problems. The resident is then tricked into accessing a particular website and providing personal information that eventually allows the caller to gain access to their computer. Police said in some cases, personal information is taken off the computer that can lead to identity theft. In other cases, the victim downloads a virus, which causes computer problems the caller will offer to fix for a fee. In one recent case, the victim ended up paying the caller several hundred dollars. To avoid being victimized by scammers claiming to be computer company representatives, police advise residents: · Not to buy any software or services · Ask if there is a fee or subscription associated with the service.
