W., has announced it will hold a `Skate Sharpening' weekend on Saturday (Oct. 6) and Sunday (Oct. 7) to support the family of Savannah Herbert. On those days, the sporting goods store's owner, Mike Hansford, said that when people bring their skates into the store to be sharpened, 100 per cent of the proceeds will go to the Herbert family. Three-year-old Savannah has been at McMaster Children's Hospital since Aug. 22, when she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive and malignant tumor that develops from nerve tissue. Savannah's mother, Brandy, has stayed by her daughter's bedside since she was admitted to McMaster, but that has caused financial issues for her family as she is its only source of income. Money raised during this `Skate Sharpening' fundraiser is intended to allow Brandy to concentrate on her daughter's fight for her life and not on whether she is going to lose her home. "As a communitybased business, our success is totally related to the people of Oakville and Burlington," said Hansford. "We want to step up Savannah Herbert and give something back to the community and this is obviously a serious situation in which a single mom needs some help." Hansford said with the beginning of the hockey season approaching there should be no shortage of residents in need of a skate sharpening. By doing it this weekend, he said, people can make life just a bit easier for a family who are enduring something no family should have to endure.
