Oakville's Community Services Committee voted Tuesday to return the on-street parking after numerous complaints that its removal was both inconvenient and more dangerous. If approved by council Tuesday, the bike lanes and no parking anytime signs added in July will be removed on River Oaks Boulevard from Mount Drive to Sixth Line. Parking would only be prohibited during peak periods from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. Town staff said it still gives cyclists a dedicated space to ride during no parking periods. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said the decision is fair to residents and cyclists. The removal of the bike lanes will cost approximately $5,000. The lanes were added as part of the Town's Active Transportation Master Plan, which seeks to prevent future traffic congestion by providing the ability to use a variety of transportation to get around town. As River Oaks Boulevard East is not wide enough for bike lanes and street parking, Town staff had opted to prohibit parking along the street.
