Cycling summit will peddle bicycle-friendly tips for community The cycling advocacy group, Share the Road, will host a special summit here Thursday, Oct. 18, in an effort to shape Halton into a bicycle-friendly region. Dubbed the Halton Active Communities Summit, the event will be held at the OE Banquet Hall, 2245 Speers Rd., and run from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. "This is a great opportunity to hear local and international experts explain how we can make every community in Ontario bicycle-friendly," said Eleanor McMahon, Share the Road CEO. Participants will hear about the latest developments in cycling travel and tourism from Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr and McMahon, and from Greenville South Carolina Councillor Amy Ryberg Doyle who will discuss how her community has embraced cycling. Share the Road described Greenville as a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community, which is seeking to `Go for Silver' and create a cycling culture there. Other topics include: · An update on Halton's Active Transportation Plan · Building bicycle-friendly communities · Active & Safe Routes to School Planning · Milton's velodrome · Halton Regional Police Service's Share the Road initiative in partnership with the Share the Road Cycling Coalition · Bicycles & Economic Development -- including a success story from Oakville This summit is one of four regional events this year to bring together cycling communities to discuss local needs and priorities. "Our coalition has expanded far beyond safety issues. While this is extremely important to us, cycling also offers health, environment and economic benefits. When you take part in cycling, you're not just enjoying a great outdoor experience; you're supporting your community," said McMahon. She said an April poll found 58 per cent of Ontarians would prefer to cycle more often -- up from 53 per cent in 2011. Safer roads for bicyclists tops the list of measures most likely to encourage Ontarians to bicycle more often, she said, with infrastructure support key to unlocking the pent-up demand for bicycling. McMahon said 61 per cent of Ontarians agree that where they live more bicycling lanes or paved shoulders are needed.
